About This Place

Huxinting Teahouse sits at the center of the lotus pond by the Nine-Turn Bridge in Shanghai’s Yuyuan Garden and is known as the “First Teahouse of Shanghai”. Its origins can be traced back to Fuyi Pavilion in the Ming-dynasty Yuyuan Garden. It was rebuilt during the Qianlong period of the Qing dynasty and became Shanghai’s earliest commercial teahouse during the Xianfeng period. With its all-wood structure and upturned eaves, the building forms a distinctive scene with the Nine-Turn Bridge and is a core landmark of Yuyuan Bazaar. The teahouse has received Queen Elizabeth II and heads of state from several countries, and its tea art is listed as intangible cultural heritage of Huangpu District. After conservation repairs, it reopened in July 2025. Today, the ground floor retains affordable morning tea, while the second floor offers premium intangible-cultural-heritage tea beverages, continuing its century-old tea culture through active preservation.
